Tonight I welcomed artist and author Rick Sorenson to explore creativity as both craft and spiritual practice. We talked about his upbringing as a pastor’s kid, how the church shaped (and sometimes restricted) artistic expression, and why creativity is part of God’s image in us.

Rick unpacked practical ways to evaluate art—separating the idea from its execution—and shared how original ideas fit within a biblical view of creativity. We also dove into worship: the balance between reverence and expression, the role of the worship leader, and David’s temple pattern of thanksgiving, praise, sacrifice, and holiness. Rick introduced his book, Art: The Church’s Response, discussed myths that keep people from creating, and previewed his writing on Substack and future projects on the nature of art and beauty.
