Some of this gear is absolutely worth owning even if you never use it. Other gear should probably be getting a lot more reps than it does.

High-End Medical Kits Without the Training

Let’s start with medical bags. You’ve all seen the expensive, tactical, high-end trauma kits. Some of them are genuinely useful, especially when they include things like antibiotics or prescription medications.

The problem is when people buy these kits and treat them like a magic talisman. If you don’t have the training to use half the contents, opening a book during an emergency isn’t going to save you. There are limits to what’s above your pay grade, and it’s important to be honest about that.

That said, having good medical gear on hand — especially if you’re part of a group with someone medically trained — makes a lot of sense. Everyone should have their own supplies. Don’t assume one “medical person” is there to fix everyone with their personal stash.

Pain Management, Reality, and Emergency Use

I’m pretty staunchly against chronic opioid use, and there’s a good reason for that. But in real life, acute pain happens. Sprains, injuries, situations where you aren’t going to the hospital but still need relief.

That’s where judgment comes in. Using minimal amounts, saving leftovers responsibly, and understanding the risks matters. Same goes for things like kratom — not a miracle drug, not harmless, but potentially useful in acute situations if you respect its downsides.

Preparedness isn’t about purity. It’s about understanding tradeoffs.
