The Gear You’ll Never Use (And Why You Bought It Anyway) | Episode 577

Opening

There’s a lot of gear that looks cool, feels cool to buy, and then quietly sits in a closet for years. In this episode, I’m talking about the stuff that rarely gets used — the gear you bought anyway — and how to think about whether it was a smart purchase or just fantasy prepping.

Some of this gear is absolutely worth owning even if you never use it. Other gear should probably be getting a lot more reps than it does.

High-End Medical Kits Without the Training

Let’s start with medical bags. You’ve all seen the expensive, tactical, high-end trauma kits. Some of them are genuinely useful, especially when they include things like antibiotics or prescription medications.

The problem is when people buy these kits and treat them like a magic talisman. If you don’t have the training to use half the contents, opening a book during an emergency isn’t going to save you. There are limits to what’s above your pay grade, and it’s important to be honest about that.

That said, having good medical gear on hand — especially if you’re part of a group with someone medically trained — makes a lot of sense. Everyone should have their own supplies. Don’t assume one “medical person” is there to fix everyone with their personal stash.

Preparedness isn’t about purity. It’s about understanding tradeoffs.

Men, Gear Fantasies, and Tactical Temptation

This is where male preppers tend to go sideways. Women often splurge on practical tools — pressure canners, grain mills, food production gear. Men gravitate toward guns, knives, plate carriers, and tactical setups.

And look — plate carriers absolutely have a place. If the worst day ever comes and it stops a
