Pause and Savor: A Daily Dose of Gratitude for Ordinary Joys
Published 1 month, 2 weeks ago
Description
Hello, and welcome. I'm Julia Cartwright, and I'm so glad you're here. Whether you're starting your day, stealing a quiet moment at lunch, or settling in this evening, you've made the choice to pause. And that choice? That's everything.
I know what January can feel like. We're two weeks in, and the initial excitement of fresh beginnings might be wearing thin. The to-do lists are piling up. Your mind is probably already spinning through obligations, maybe even some disappointments. So today, I want to invite you to something radical and simple: noticing what's already working, already here, already yours.
Let's begin by finding a comfortable seat, whether that's on a cushion, a chair, or even standing if that feels right for you. Close your eyes if you'd like, or just soften your gaze downward. There's no perfect way to do this.
Now, take three intentional breaths with me. Breathe in slowly through your nose, and as you exhale, imagine releasing the weight of everything you think you should be doing right now. In through the nose. Out through the mouth. One more time, letting your shoulders drop away from your ears.
Here's our practice today. I want you to think of gratitude not as a performance or a checklist, but as a gift you give yourself. Think of something small, something you might normally overlook. Maybe it's the warmth of your cup of tea, the person who texted you kindness recently, or the fact that your body carried you through another day. Don't strain for something profound. The ordinary is where joy actually lives.
Picture this moment with all your senses. What do you see around you right now? What do you feel against your skin? What sounds are present, even the quiet ones? As you notice these details, let yourself feel genuinely grateful for them. Not because you should. But because you actually are.
Let this feeling settle into your chest like a warm stone. This is gratitude in its truest form. It's not about being positive or forcing happiness. It's about recognizing that even in difficult moments, there are threads of goodness woven through your day.
As we close, carry this practice forward. Today, pick one moment, just one, where you pause and truly notice something you're grateful for. It might be during your commute, or while you're eating lunch. Let it be simple. Let it be real.
Thank you for joining me in this gratitude practice. Your presence here matters more than you know. Please subscribe to Gratitude Practice: Daily Mindfulness Reflections for Happiness so we can continue this journey together.
