The Highway of Tears is a stretch of Highway 16 in northern British Columbia that has become synonymous with the disappearances and murders of numerous women and girls, many of them Indigenous. Running roughly 725 kilometres between Prince George and Prince Rupert, the corridor has been at the centre of decades of unanswered questions, grieving families and calls for justice. Beyond the individual cases, the Highway of Tears has become part of the broader national conversation surrounding Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) in Canada. We look at the families and communities continuing to demand answers, the recommendations developed to improve safety along Highway 16, and why the fight for justice and accountability continues today.
