Back to EpisodesExodus (Lesson 41)
Description
We walk through Exodus 22 to show how God’s law weds justice to mercy: double restitution instead of jail, due process over gossip, sexual responsibility with real costs, and strong protection for strangers, widows, and orphans. We argue that firm penalties for a few create safety for the many, and that structured compassion restrains exploitation.
• private property affirmed and restitution required
• accusations tested before judges with both parties present
• borrowing, renting, and evidence for loss clarified
• seduction addressed with dowry and marriage responsibility
• witchcraft and sexual perversion condemned with bright lines
• worship of false gods distinguished from New Testament practice
• strangers treated fairly without erasing citizenship
• widows and orphans shielded by God’s active defense
• lending to the poor without usury; pledges returned nightly
• God’s grace seen in just judgments that protect society
