Coastal LA Fishing Report: Crazy Tides, Big Waves, and Hot Bites Await Anglers - Artificial Lure's Monday Update
Published 2 months, 3 weeks ago
Description
Hey folks, this is Artificial Lure, your go-to guy for all things fishing around LA. It's Monday, January 5th, 2026, and we're kickin' off the day at 8:26 AM with some wild coastal action. Tides today got a low at 3:45 AM hittin' 2.0 feet, then high tide around 9:53 AM at 6.55 feet—king tide vibes still lingerin' from yesterday, per Tide-Forecast.com. Sunrise was at 6:16 AM, sunset at 4:55 PM, with very high solunar activity makin' fish extra feisty, says Tides4Fishing.
Weather's dicey out there—NWS Los Angeles-Oxnard issued a Beach Hazards Statement through this mornin', warnin' of dangerous rip currents, 14-foot waves, and minor coastal floodin' from those high tides and gusty southerlies. LA Times reports rain easin' up today after yesterday's downpours, but stay off jetties and rocks, and swim near lifeguards if you dare.
Fish are bitin' despite the surf! Yesterday's reports from 976-TUNA.com are lit: Pursuit out of 22nd Street Landing nabbed calico bass, bonito, and a big sheephead. Marina del Rey Sportfishing tallied 530 fish—218 sculpin, 155 whitefish, 100 mackerel, plus rockfish, calico bass, sand bass, and sheephead on 103 anglers. Victory out of Long Beach hit limits of sculpin, 49 calico bass, 103 blue perch, mackerel, whitefish, sheephead, and rockfish. Monte Carlo got near 60 keeper calicos and bottom dwellers like whitefish and perch in clean, warm 67-degree water. Pierpoint Landing boats pulled 188 sand bass, 132 bluefin tuna, yellowtail, barracuda—even some halibut and more bass.
Activity's hot near the surface, so rig up small sliders, small plastics, A-rigs, or flyline bait. For bottom fish, drop squid or anchovies—those sculpin and rockfish are grabbin' everything. Drop-shot worms or jigs for calicos and sand bass.
Hot spots? Hit 22nd Street Landing or Pierpoint Landing in Long Beach for easy access to the action—book now, spots fill fast. Or try Marina del Rey for mixed bags if surf calms.
Be safe out there, check conditions, and wet a line!
