First Real Photos of Pluto Show Unusual Red Ice

Published 2 months, 2 weeks ago
Description

On Pluto, the mountain peaks are covered with frozen methane. Because of its specific chemical composition, the snow on Pluto… is red. Astronomers discovered it in 1930, and Pluto was considered the ninth planet of our planetary system until 2006, after which it was recategorized as a dwarf planet. One interesting thing about this former planet is that it sometimes has an atmosphere, sometimes not. It has an oval-shaped orbit, which means, unlike almost all other planets, it doesn’t travel around the sun in almost perfect circles.
