LA Angling Kickoff: Breezy Bonito, Rockfish Limits, and Stormy Tides for 2026's First Catch

Description
Hey folks, Artificial Lure here, your go-to guy for SoCal angling straight outta the LA scene. It's early January 2nd, 2026, and we're kickin' off the year with some solid ocean action despite the stormy vibes lingerin' from New Year's rain—LAFD says the worst passed yesterday, but watch for gusty winds and king tides pushin' high to 6.7-7.5 feet per NOAA and NWS LA-Oxnard alerts.

Tides today in LA outer harbor hit low around 3:40 AM at 2.49 feet, high at 9:13 AM pushin' 6 feet, low again 5:09 PM—Tide-Forecast.com has similar charts showin' strong currents stirrin' baitfish. Sunrise at 6:53 AM, sunset 5:18 PM, so fish that incoming mornin' tide hard. Weather's clearin' but breezy southerlies—bundle up.

Fish are bitin'! 976-TUNA reports the Malihini out of 22nd Street Landing bagged 132 rockfish and 85 bonito yesterday on a 3/4-day run—bonito crashin' the surface like crazy. Pierfishing.com says Imperial Beach Pier's steady with bonito between storms, and locals hittin' SoCal piers for 'em too. Deeper, rockfish limits common; watch for halibut schools movin' in with tides. Salmon runs up north are boomin' per Gold Country Media—40k+ Chinook back in Battle Creek—but here, focus saltwater.

Best lures: Jerkbaits, drop shots, and chartreuse PowerBait for nearshore trout if you're bank-bound. Rapalas in orange-bottom for rainbows trollin' slow at 2 mph. Live bait? Sardines or anchovies on high tide for bonito and rockfish—works killer.

Hot spots: King Harbor in Santa Monica Bay for easy pier access and tides runnin' strong per USHarbors; or Ballona Wetlands area—CDFW's got cleanups there, but fish the creek mouth for perch and bass. Seaforth Landing half-days are runnin' today if you boat it.

Stay safe on those beaches with hazards advisories through Jan 4.
