Sally Ride: Trailblazing Astronaut and Physicist

Episode 1145

Sally Ride was a pioneering American physicist and astronaut who made history in 1983 as the first American woman to journey into space. Beyond her two notable missions aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger, she played a critical role in investigating the Challenger and Columbia disasters. After leaving NASA, Ride focused on science education and public outreach, co-founding an organization to inspire students—particularly young girls—to pursue STEM careers. She was a highly decorated academic who held a PhD from Stanford and later served as a physics professor at the University of California, San Diego. Following her death from pancreatic cancer in 2012, her obituary revealed a nearly three-decade relationship with her partner, Tam O'Shaughnessy, identifying her as the first known LGBTQ astronaut. Her enduring legacy is marked by numerous honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom and her depiction on United States currency.
