His killers—ten teenagers from the suburbs—were caught, but justice moved slowly, if at all. Local authorities downplayed the attack, media coverage was scarce, and the city tried to move on. But Houston’s LGBTQ+ community wouldn’t let the case fade into silence. What followed became known as “Houston’s Stonewall”—a turning point that forced a reckoning with hate crimes and queer visibility in Texas.
