Teen's Hospital Statements Challenged in Mass Shooting Trial
Defense attorneys for the teenager accused in a mass shooting in Raleigh are seeking to block statements made by their client in the hospital from being used in his upcoming murder trial. Austin Thompson, now 18, is accused of killing five people, including his brother, and injuring two others in 2022. He was seriously injured in a shootout with law enforcement and sustained a bullet to the front part of his brain. His attorneys argue that his severe brain injury at the time, along with the lack of Miranda rights and parental presence, make his statements inadmissible as evidence.
