Lumbee Tribe Gains Federal Recognition After 137 Years

The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina is on the brink of receiving full federal recognition and benefits, a journey that has lasted one hundred and thirty-seven years. The Senate recently voted in favor of recognizing the tribe, which would grant them access to crucial federal assistance for healthcare, education, and economic development. The Lumbee, with around sixty thousand members, are the largest tribe east of the Mississippi River and have been seeking federal recognition since eighteen eighty-eight. Despite opposition from other tribes and a long fight for recognition, the Lumbee are now awaiting the Presidents signature to finalize this long-sought recognition.
