Southern California Fishing Report: Rockfish Reign, Tides and Lures Revealed

Sunrise at 6:51 AM, sunset 4:46 PM—plenty of daylight to chase 'em. Weather's classic December: mid-60s, light offshore breeze, mostly sunny per the local forecast.
Fish are bitin' steady after yesterday's hauls. SoCalFishReports tallies rockfish dominatin'—Coral Sea out of Santa Barbara limited 300 on two boats, Aloha Spirit from Oxnard boated 200 rockfish plus 12 lingcod and whitefish. Closer in, Marina del Rey's New Del Mar had 15 sand bass, a halibut, 130 sculpin, 10 sheephead. Spitfire nabbed 22 sand bass, 2 halibut, 12 calico bass. Long Beach Victory crushed 273 rockfish, 195 sculpin, sheephead and whitefish. Dana Point's Clemente reefed 107 rockfish. 976-TUNA says 10 boats yesterday with 207 anglers pulled 721 rockfish, 452 bonito—action's hot on the bottom.
For lures, drop-shot those NetBait 2.5-inch scent-infused tubes—they're neutrally buoyant killers for rockfish and bass. Jigs in white or green for reef bites, or swimbaits for halibut. Live bait? Sardines or anchovies on the hook rule for sheephead and sculpin—fresh from the bait barge.
