Description
What does it really look like to commit your whole life to God, not just your words?
We’ve all been there: full of fresh inspiration and making bold promises to do better. But what happens when the dust settles and sticking to those promises gets tough?
While Nehemiah tackles real-life hurdles like family priorities, honoring the Sabbath, and giving back, he faces another huge issue in Nehemiah 10-11: Jerusalem is a complete ghost town. The city walls are built, but nobody is living inside!
To get the community thriving again, Nehemiah uses a mix of casting lots and calling for brave volunteers to repopulate the city. Through their story, we learn what it takes to shift from empty promises to wholehearted commitment.
In our Nehemiah 10–11 Bible study, we cover:
- [3:26] The Impossible Promise: Why 84 leaders sign a binding agreement with God that they can't keep, and why we need the Holy Spirit, not just willpower.
- [9:28] Family, Faith, and Finances: How Ezra and Nehemiah tackle marriage choices, Sabbath distractions, and giving back.
- [9:44] The Firstborn Connection: The thread linking Exodus traditions, Nehemiah's era, and Mary and Joseph presenting baby Jesus.
- [14:51] Ghost Town Recovery: How Nehemiah uses drawing lots and eager volunteers to spark an urban revival in Jerusalem.
- [15:52] Uncomfortable Sacrifices: Why trading suburban comfort for God's calling turns everyday laypeople into biblical heroes.
- [29:22] Living as Exiles: How our modern lives mirror those of the ancient Israelites as we learn to live out our faith wherever God places us.

Group Discussion Questions for Nehemiah 10-11
1. [13:52] Nehemiah requires commitments in three areas: family, faith, and finances. What do you think God wants our commitment to marriage, the Sabbath, and supporting the church to look like today?
2. [15:42] Some families are chosen by lot to sacrifice the comfort of where they live for where God wants them. How would you feel if your family was chosen to give up a comfortable home and move into a city destroyed by war and neglect?
3. [29:22] The Israelites are described as being much like us: exiles, battling temptation, needing to commit to walking with God. Where do you see the clearest parallel between the Israelites of Nehemiah's day and your own life?
