Philip Rivers Returns, Colts Place Smith on IR

Philip Rivers Returns, Colts Place Smith on IR

The Indianapolis Colts have signed retired quarterback Philip Rivers, 44, to their active roster from the practice squad, just days before their Week Fifteen game against the Seattle Seahawks. Rivers, who retired nearly five years ago, will now be available to play on Sunday, marking an unexpected return to the field. To make room for him, the team placed tackle Braden Smith on injured reserve. Rivers decision to come out of retirement does not affect his Hall of Fame eligibility, as he is no longer eligible for the two thousand twenty-six class. He will have to wait until the two thousand thirty-one class for another chance at a gold jacket. The Colts also elevated wide receiver Coleman Owen and defensive tackle Chris Wormley from the practice squad for this weekends game. Head coach Shane Steichen has not yet announced a starting quarterback, with rookie Riley Leonard and veteran Brett Rypien also in the mix.
