Officer's Death Sparks Mental Health Debate
A WakeMed police officer, Roger Smith, was tragically shot and killed at the WakeMed Garner Healthplex on November eighth. Benji Martin Junior, a 29-year-old Garner resident, has been charged with murder in connection with the incident. Martin was also seriously injured and required a colostomy, spending nearly two weeks in the hospital. His defense attorney has requested additional medical supplies for his colostomy. Friends and family claim Martin was seeking help for a mental health crisis and did not receive appropriate care from WakeMed staff. Martin is scheduled to be arraigned on January twelfth.
