Daily Ski Conditions for Aspen Snowmass, Colorado

Aspen Snowmass is currently shaping up for an early-season experience that’s definitely worth your ski boots. As of the latest update, the snow depth at the summit of Aspen Mountain sits at a modest but growing 33 cm (about 13 inches), with 22 cm (around 9 inches) down at the base—mostly artificial snow making an early stand here due to some colder nights supporting snowmaking efforts. Over at Snowmass itself, the base depth is reported at about 43 cm (17 inches) while the summit holds around 61 cm (24 inches), which is just 86% of their usual average for this time of year but still promising for mid-December cruising.

The past couple of days have seen light new snowfall: Aspen Mountain has had less than 1 cm in the last 24 and 48 hours, while Snowmass enjoyed a more generous dusting with 23 cm (9 inches) over the last 48 hours, contributing to some fresh powder magic off-piste. However, forecasts indicate no significant new snow incoming for the next 5 days, so it’s all about making the most of what’s packed underfoot right now. Weather-wise, Aspen is chilly with daytime highs hovering just above freezing at the base and slightly below at the summit, with temperatures ranging between roughly -12°C and -1°C on the mountain. Expect mostly clear skies to partly cloudy conditions over the next several days, and that freeze-thaw dance which can make grooming a bit tricky but often results in excellent corn snow by midday.

Currently, Aspen Mountain’s operational capacity is limited — only 2 of 9 lifts are running, opening about 7 km of skiable terrain out of 103 km total, mostly focused on the valley run. The conditions are still early season, so many of the advanced and expert runs remain closed as the resort builds up its snow base. Snowmass is a bit more generous with 7 out of 41 lifts open and 14 out of 366 runs available, mostly beginner and intermediate terrain. No expert or advanced slopes are open yet at Snowmass, so this is a great time for cruisers and those easing into the season.

The piste conditions reflect this early season status: well-groomed valley runs are your best bet, especially on Snowmass, where the grooming teams have been hard at work to deliver smooth corduroy. Off-piste adventures are possible if you’re equipped for some powder, but terrain is limited and variable depending on fresh snow accumulation and wind scouring. Speaking of wind, recent gusts reached notable speeds on Colorado’s Front Range, but Aspen’s current conditions are calm, which makes for pleasant skiing if you dress in layers to stay warm.

Looking ahead, the next five days hold steady with no new snowfall expected, sunny to partly cloudy skies, and temperatures warming a bit during the day but dropping below freezing at night — perfect for natural and manmade snow preservation and maintenance of good skiing conditions. The current ski season kicked off late November and will run through mid-April, so there’s plenty of time for more snow to buff out those slopes into their classic powder pillows. Seasonal snowfall averages around 287 inches (over 700 cm) annually across Aspen Snowmass, so patience will reward powder hunters soon enough.

A heads-up for visitors: the Breathtaker Alpine Coaster is closed until December 12, 2025, so no après-ski coaster rides just yet; also, night skiing is not available. Dress warmly and be prepared for variable early-season conditions, with some lifts and terrain not yet open. But don’t let that hold you back — the mountain’s beauty and the crisp mountain air make every run enjoyable, especially if you enjoy the peaceful early-season vibe before the crowds hit.

So grab your gear, wax those edges, and take advantage of the early-season slopes open at Aspen Snowmass — fresh snow, solid base-building, and stunning mountain views await,
