means to not treat something as seriously as you should — to ignore the importance or the weight of a situation.
Examples:

1- She finally gathered the courage to tell someone she wasn’t doing well,
 but they changed the subject and said, “You’ll be fine.”
 In that moment, she realized they had taken her feelings lightly,
 and it hurt more than she expected.
