Season 10 Episode 7

The LifeSpring WhyChristmas Advent Calendar continues with a look at two beautiful Christmas traditions—one centuries old and one a surprisingly modern addition. Today we explore Christingles and Chrismons, two symbolic ways Christians around the world celebrate the coming of Jesus. These customs are rich with meaning and offer creative ways to bring Scripture and symbolism into your Christmas season.
A Christingle, whose name means “Christ’s light,” originated in Europe and has been used for more than 200 years in Moravian church services. Each part of a Christingle represents an aspect of God’s love and provision: the orange symbolizing the world, the candle representing Christ the Light, the red ribbon recalling His sacrificial love, the four sticks pointing to the seasons, and the fruits symbolizing God’s blessings. It’s a hands-on way families and congregations remember the meaning of Christmas.
Chrismons, on the other hand, began in the United States in the 1950s at the Ascension Lutheran Church in Virginia. Combining the words “Christ” and “monogram,” Chrismons are white-and-gold symbols hung on Christmas trees to proclaim Christ’s identity—crosses, stars, doves, crowns, and more. White represents His purity, and gold represents His kingship. Many churches today decorate Chrismon trees as a visual testimony of Jesus’ life and ministry.
