The institution was ancient and universal. The machine was new. This episode traces how the specific apparatus of Atlantic slavery — industrial, permanent, hereditary, and racial — was assembled and carried west until it reached the Carolina coast. It begins not in Africa but in a Mediterranean that Europeans were being pushed out of by Ottoman power, follows a caravel down the African coast to the first auction at Lagos, and lands on the volcanic island of Sao Tome — the African proving ground where Europeans first watched the plantation model pay, and built its lethal mortality math into the business plan. From there: Brazil, the Caribbean, and the same machine a Barbadian carried ashore in Carolina.

At its center is the Middle Passage, told in documented detail and in the voices of the people who survived it and the people who ran it — Equiano, Falconbridge, the slave-ship captain who wrote Amazing Grace, and the Zong, where an English court weighed the killing of a hundred and thirty-three people as a question of cargo. The horror of the crossing was not the system breaking down. It was the system working exactly as designed. This is the hardest hour of the season, told the only way that makes the rest of it comprehensible: from the inside, by the cold logic of the men who built it.
