Lebanese farmers rush to salvage harvest as ceasefire with Israel fails to ensure safety
Published 3 months ago
Description
Lebanese farmers are rushing to salvage their harvests under the protection of the Lebanese army and UN peacekeepers, as a year-old ceasefire with Israel has failed to ensure safety due to ongoing Israeli military operations and the presence of unexploded ordnance in Southern Lebanon. A US-brokered ceasefire agreement, signed in November 2024 to end a year-long war, stipulated that both Israeli and Lebanese forces (Hezbollah was to withdraw) pull back from the border area. However, Israel has maintained troops in five strategic locations in the south and has conducted near-daily air raids and ground operations since the agreement took effect, which it claims are aimed at preventing Hezbollah from rebuilding its capabilities.
