Victoria's three-month machete amnesty period has ended, making it illegal to buy, sell or own machetes in the state. Around 9,000 machetes were disposed of through 45 collection bins across Victoria at a cost of $13 million. Possession of a machete now carries penalties of up to $47,000 in fines and two years imprisonment.
