The lesser-known history of lacrosse, a uniquely American sport
Published 3 months, 1 week ago
Description
For Native American nations across the continent, especially the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy, the game was known by various names, such as tewaarathon (Mohawk) or baggataway (Algonquin), and was deeply interwoven with culture and spirituality. It was considered a gift from the Creator, often referred to as "The Creator's Game," played for the Creator's enjoyment and as a form of medicine to heal the sick, strengthen the community, and resolve inter-tribal disputes without actual warfare.
