मदनमोहनमालवीयः विश्वविद्यालयस्य संस्थापनाय कृतनिश्चयः सन् धनसङ्ग्रहाय सर्वत्र भ्रमित्वा कदाचित् कोलकातापत्तने कस्य श्रेष्ठिनः गृहं प्राप्तवान् । श्रेष्ठिनः बालेन काचित् अग्निशलाका प्रज्वालिता । विना कारणं अग्निशलाका व्यर्थीकृता इति कारणतः असः श्रेष्ठी बालस्य मुखे चपेटिकां दत्तवान् । शलाकामात्राय बालं ताडयितु उद्यतात् एतस्मात् दानस्य प्राप्त्याशा व्यर्था एव इति विचिन्त्य यदा निवर्तनाय उद्यतः मालवीयवर्यः तदा सः श्रेष्ठी तम् आहूय अगामनस्य कारणं पृष्ट्वा तस्मै पञ्चाशत्सहस्रमितं धनं अयच्छत्  ।  योग्यस्थाने महतः‌ दानस्य वियोगः करणीयः इति तस्य मतम् आसीत् ।

Madan Mohan Malaviya, having resolved to establish a university, traveled widely to raise funds. Once, he visited the home of a wealthy merchant in Kolkata. At that moment, the merchant’s child lit a matchstick unnecessarily, prompting the merchant to slap the child for wasting it. Witnessing this, Malaviya thought that if the merchant could react so harshly over a mere matchstick, there was little hope of receiving a donation from him, and he prepared to leave. However, the merchant called him back, asked the reason for his visit, and upon learning it, donated ₹50,000. His belief was that great donations should be made for worthy causes. This incident highlights the value of purposeful giving and the wisdom of supporting noble endeavors.
