This week on The Next Take Podcast, Canada’s own Mikel and Tanyka take a closer look at the surprising end of Canada’s beloved Family Channel, which first launched in 1988, and while also breaking down the Netflix shows that kept them entertained throughout October.

For nearly four decades, Family Channel was a major part of Canadian children’s television, introducing generations of viewers to kids’ shows, teen sitcoms and family entertainment. But after years of changes in how audiences consume television, the iconic Canadian channel reached the end of its run. In 2025, WildBrain announced plans to shut down Family Channel along with Family Jr., WildBrainTV and Télémagino. The decision followed the loss of major distribution agreements with Bell and Rogers. WildBrain said that without those carriage agreements, operating the channels was no longer commercially viable. Family Channel ultimately ended broadcasting in October 2025.
