Description
Are referendums an opportunity to hear “the voice of the people”, or an easy excuse for politicians to pass the buck and not do their jobs? Referendums have been used by Canadian politicians to avoid their responsibilities (and as public relations stunts) for generations. Recently, Newfoundland and Labrador held a provincial election, electing premier-designate Tony Wakeham. In his victory speech, Wakeham called for a referendum on the controversial Churchill Falls hydroelectric deal. Let’s talk about it among other examples.
