Supernatural Music Extravaganza: A Mixtape 20 Years in the Making | Series Premiere

Episode 1 Published 11 months, 2 weeks ago
Description

Supernatural turns 20, and its musical legacy finally gets the deep dive it deserves 🎸 Berly and LA of Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast, team up with Sadie Witkowski of In Defense of Fandom for the Supernatural Music Extravaganza: a full series on the music of Supernatural, from the classic rock needle drops and the score to convention concerts and the musicians the show inspired.

The lineup? 20+ interviews with cast, crew, and the extended SPNFamily, because apparently these three are insane.

Episode highlights:

  • Sadie borrows Berly’s name to ask Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki about Supernatural’s musical legacy at the Austin convention (Berly is a good friend who understands J2 priorities)
  • Jensen on the needle drops the show wanted but couldn’t afford
  • Eric Kripke on threatening to quit when the WB wanted to swap classic rock for “current, exciting, young music,” in a clip from Supernatural Then and Now with Rob Benedict and Richard Speight Jr.
  • The fan-favorite needle drops: Death’s entrance, “Renegade” by Styx in Nightshifter, and “Rooster” by Alice in Chains in Folsom Prison Blues
  • A moment of silence for the songs lost to streaming licensing (RIP “Don’t Fear the Reaper” in Faith)
  • “Heat of the Moment,” “The Gambler,” and a Mystery Spot giggle fit
  • The Impalas, a Supernatural crew band, complete with saxophone
  • Convention music 101: Saturday Night Special, Louden Swain as the house band, Jason Manns, karaoke, and the vendor room jam
  • PSA: you don’t need a convention ticket to go to Saturday Night Special
  • Composers Chris Lennertz and Jay Gruska, and why Supernatural’s soundtrack still sounds timeless (Smallville could never)

Fair warning to regular listeners: these interviews happened at reasonable morning hours, so tragically, no one is tipsy.

To hear every interview, follow both Denim-wrapped Nightmares and In Defense of Fandom. This episode and the finale run on both feeds, but the rest of the series is split between the two shows. It’s free, so they’re really not that evil about it. Listen along with the series playlist on Spotify and YouTube Music.

Your turn, hunters: What’s your favorite Supernatural needle drop? And did you know conventions had concerts before your first one? Drop your answers in the Spotify comments, leave a rating or review on Apple Podcasts, or send fan mail.
