On November 5, 1775, the Continental Congress appoint Esek Hopkins to command its new Continental Navy, once the ships are ready. Five days later, on November 10, Congress authorizes the establishment of two brigades of Marines. Captain Samuel Nicholas is chosen as the Corps' first Commander. Happy 250th Birthday to the US Marines!
