LA Fishing Report: Booming Bluefin, Calico Bass, & Bottom Dwellers Biting in SoCal Seas

LA Fishing Report: Booming Bluefin, Calico Bass, & Bottom Dwellers Biting in SoCal Seas

Artificial Lure with your Los Angeles area fishing report for Monday, November 3, 2025.

Sunrise hit at 7:13 AM this morning and sunset rolls around at about 5:59 PM, so anglers are getting shorter windows, but the bite is on. Weather-wise, we’re enjoying classic SoCal fall conditions—cool in the morning (high 50s), rising to the mid-70s as the sun burns off the fog. Hardly a breath of wind and flat, glassy water. Perfect conditions for both surf casting and boat trips.

Today’s tides at the Port of Los Angeles saw a high tide at 6:58 AM (peaking up to 6.56 ft), with a mid-day low at 1:34 PM dipping to 0.39 ft, and another rising tide at 7:41 PM expected to hit 5.22 ft. So if you’re heading out after work, you’ll catch that evening push—a classic setup for surf fishing and pier action.

Let’s break down what’s biting. The boats out of Long Beach and San Pedro, including Victory and Monte Carlo, have been putting up impressive numbers: Victory reported limits of sculpin, 49 calico bass, 103 blue perch, 25 whitefish, 8 sheephead, and 50 rockfish. Monte Carlo called in with a haul heavy on whitefish and sheephead, plus a strong showing from calico bass—just shy of 60 keepers yesterday. Steven with Monte Carlo said to focus on dropper loop rigs with squid and shrimp, which proved deadly for bottom dwellers. Lingcod and rockfish are steady for those running deeper structure, and there was some hot bluefin action offshore last week, with the Freedom out of 22nd Street Landing hitting their limits before 10 AM.

For surfcasters and jetty jocks, perch and halibut are turning up around Dockweiler and White Point. Sand crabs, bloodworms, and gulp baits have been putting fish on the sand for early risers. Night bite is decent for barred sand bass and a few legal halibut—swim baits like Big Hammer and plastics in motor oil or smelt patterns are working.

Lure choice right now? For boats targeting calicos, throw the classic Kicker Jigs or MC Swimbaits in browns and greens. If you’re on the drift, a whole squid pinned to a dropper loop is king—especially for whitefish and sheephead. Sculpin like the leadhead/strip bait combo. When it comes to targeting bluefin, stick with Madmacs or flat fall jigs around the outer banks if you get a chance to run out deep.

Recent catches include solid numbers of rockfish and lingcod—Redondo Special scored 159 rockfish, 3 lingcod, and some whitefish. City of Long Beach found 185 sculpin and 150 whitefish—solid bottom action, especially with the tide swings. Over in Newport, the Thunderbird put up 61 bluefin, 37 sheephead, 28 yellowtail, 116 whitefish, 51 bonito, 52 red snapper, and 199 rockfish.

Hot spots to check right now:
- 22nd Street Landing, San Pedro: limits of bluefin and mixed bottom catches.
- Long Beach breakwall and Horseshoe Kelp: consistent calico and whitefish, plus some blue perch.
- Redondo Beach: killer rockfish action and a few surprise halibut.

Anglers are reporting best results with fresh squid, live anchovy if you can get ‘em, and for surf, sand crabs and grubs tipped with shrimp. Early and late bites are strongest—avoid the slack at midday unless you’re dropping deep for rockfish.
