Pilanesberg, South Africa

Season 4 Episode 225

“Pilanesberg” by Steve Adams
In a vast expanse of South African plateau, one will find mountains protruding from an endless, arid African veld.  Located about 90 miles from the capital city, Pretoria, this outcropping of mountains is the last remaining vestige of an ancient volcano thought to have formed over a billion years ago.
 Its name is Pilanesberg.
It was here that I found myself riding the Skytrain over the rim of the outermost ring and, as we crested the hill, a lush, green and blue oasis appeared before us.
As we approached, we saw parasailing, massive themed hotels and carnival rides interspersed throughout a veritable Shangri-La nestled snugly inside mountains of old basalt rock.
We were visiting a place called Sun City, the Las Vegas of South Africa.  What was especially notable is that Sun City is in no way a secret, but with its location being hidden by the rising mountains of an old volcano, it very much is a hidden Gem.
