Supernatural: Sacrifice (8x23) | Recap & Lore

Season 8 Episode 23 Published 11 months, 4 weeks ago
Description

Supernatural Season 8, Episode 23, Sacrifice recap 🕯️ It’s the Season 8 finale: one last trial, a church straight out of a ’90s music video, and so, so many tears, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

Crowley is killing everyone the boys have ever saved, and Jody Mills is next on his list. Dean makes a deal he swore he never would, and Kevin finally gets a key to the bunker. Meanwhile, Cas and Metatron are working through their own trials to close Heaven. Bring tissues. Berly and LA certainly needed them.

Episode Highlights:

  • Jody Mills goes on a blind date with “Roderick,” and Crowley’s ringtone is Sir Mix-a-Lot
  • Kevin finally gets the bunker key: “No keggers.” “I don’t have any friends.”
  • Cas tries to set the bartender up with a dating ad at 10 a.m. on a Tuesday
  • A 10-foot contract in Bobby’s old junkyard, and Dean has a surprise
  • The church from the November Rain video (Slash was busy)
  • Kevin pours himself a whiskey, and nobody blames him
  • Crowley bites Sam, then makes a call from the palm of his hand
  • Abaddon kicks in the church doors, perfectly backlit, stitches and all
  • Crowley’s HBO-fueled monologue (Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Girls), and a Mark Sheppard moment that left Berly sobbing
  • A Sam and Dean church scene that had both hosts crying, from showrunner Jeremy Carver and director Phil Sgriccia (no surprise there)

Berly says Mark Sheppard, Jared Padalecki, and Kim Rhodes deliver knockout performances, and LA wants to add Jensen Ackles to that list. Kim Rhodes wins the gore award without much blood at all, because her terror is that convincing. Berly wishes the show had kept the angels’ true forms a mystery, and she has high hopes for where Cas goes next. And both hosts are still screaming: did Jody survive?

In the lore segment, LA revisits the angel lore from Lazarus Rising, with an article arguing that our culture has an angel problem. Biblical angels aren’t cute or comforting. They’re terrifying, with loads of eyes and multiple faces, which is why they open with “Be not afraid.” They’re not dead people who got promoted, the Bible never mentions personal guardian angels, and “cherubim” is plural (it’s one cherub). They probably don’t sing, either, but they do shout a lot, which Berly points out explains all those shattered windows. Their main job is delivering news, usually terrifying news.

“Larger than life. Gruff. A bit sexist, but fair. Eminently fair.” – Metatron
