Published 5 months, 3 weeks ago
Description
According to Mesa Police Department, early Wednesday morning near Sossaman and Ray roads, a shooting incident resulted in a Mesa police officer sustaining non-life-threatening injuries. There are no outstanding suspects at this time, and the incident remains under investigation.
The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office reports that in an earlier high-profile incident involving the Arizona Agribusiness and Equine Center Mesa campus, Cory Kapahulehua was sentenced to 187 years in prison after a jury convicted him on 17 charges connected to inappropriate and illegal conduct with underage students. The older and younger victims were students at the school, and testimony described sexual encounters at various off-campus and on-campus locations. Kapahulehua was arrested, tried, and is now incarcerated.
Mesa police processed additional felony bookings throughout the week, including aggravated assault, burglary, theft, and drug-related alleged offenses. Among those booked were adult males and females of various ages on charges involving alleged possession of controlled substances and property crimes. According to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Daily Jail Population Report, arrests were conducted across neighborhoods citywide, and numerous suspects remain in custody on charges awaiting court proceedings.
No active police appeals for public assistance were issued this week regarding outstanding suspects, and no public suspect descriptions are being circulated in reference to ongoing investigations.
Current review of the week’s activity reveals no significant uptick in a particular type of crime, suggesting an average incident volume relative to recent monthly citywide trends. However, listeners are advised that investigations are ongoing in multiple felonies and should not approach potential scenes if witness to suspicious activity.
