श्रीरामचन्द्रस्य वनवासकाले प्रवृत्ता घटना एषा । कदाचित् श्रीरामः कुटिरात् बहिः गतवान् आसीत् । लक्ष्मणः वृक्षस्य अधः उपविश्य श्रीरामस्य विषये चिन्तामग्नः आसीत् । तदा निद्रया आवृतया सीतया शिरः स्थापयितुम् उपधानत्वेन किमपि अनुपलब्धे, सा लक्ष्मणस्य अङ्के शिरः स्थापयित्वा शयितवती । प्रत्यागतेन श्रीरामेण अन्तर्ज्ञानेन वस्तुस्थितौ अवगतायाम् अपि लक्ष्मणस्य परीक्षा करणीया इति विचिन्तितम् । शुकरूपं धृत्वा सः लक्षणस्य परीक्षां कथं करोति इति कथायाः विषयः ।

This incident took place during Shri Rama’s exile in the forest. One day, Rama had gone out of the hut. Lakshmana sat under a tree, deeply worried about Rama. Sita, feeling sleepy and unable to find a pillow, gently rested her head on Lakshmana’s lap. When Rama returned, he understood the situation through his inner wisdom, but still felt that Lakshmana’s loyalty should be tested. So, Rama took the form of a wild boar to examine Lakshmana’s character. How he conducts this test and what unfolds is the theme of this story.
