It's the Recap Show!! Miami dominated the second half of the game to finish off a 42-7 win over Stanford. And to keep it positive, we start with the second half of the game because there were a lot of issues with the first half. The defense adjusted and completely shut down Stanford in the second half, holding them in total to as many yards in the second half as they had on the first drive of the game. With seven games in the books, Ro declares that the defense is legit, even though Toast wants to know if they will hold up against good teams until the offense figures out what they're doing.
Mark Fletcher also had a monster game, with three touchdowns and over 100 yards, even though he continued to run the ball between the tackles and eventually wore the Stanford defense down... which means they will likely continue to push that same running game, even though we all want more variety. Ro was also happy with Carson Beck's performance, even though he didn't have a monster game and was victimized by some drops by the wide receivers. And everyone marvels at the talent of Malachi Toney, who might be one of the best players we've ever seen at Miami. Plus it was great to have our friend Roddy Jones on the call.
BUT... we get around to the UGLY first half... and Scoop was at the game, with an up-close look at just how bad it was in the stadium for the first 30 minutes. It starts with the run game, which was the same from last week, you just were able to wear down Stanford's line, a game plan that won't work against better opponents. He is also frustrated at how easy it is to see what Miami is going to run offensively as they line up, and this from fans who just know a little bit of ball.... which means professionals are going to be able to pick them to pieces unless they change something.
The conversation turns from the offensive struggles and lack of creativity, into how this team's DNA will fail them in the Playoffs if they don't try to adjust. The lack of adjustments in the run game, the complete lack of vertical passing, and the lack of tight end use has everyone questioning the approach as we get into the most meaningful part of the season. Toast is frustrated with the screens (sound familiar?) and even the broadcasters are questioning why we stopped throwing it downfield. Regardless of the win, there are a lot of concerns as we head into a noon kick at SMU next week. And everyone has some mixed projections about the final five games of the season.
