Description
Supernatural Season 8, Episode 21, The Great Escapist recap 🪽 Cas hides out in every Biggerson’s in America, Kevin sends a “if you’re watching this, I’m dead” video, and the boys go looking for the scribe of God on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.
Kevin is back on the houseboat with the other half of the demon tablet. Or is he? The trials are wrecking Sam, Dean is going full mother hen, and a video from Kevin pushes them to act. Meanwhile, Cas is on the run from Naomi with the angel tablet, and he’s found the perfect hiding place.
Episode Highlights:
- A houseboat, a forgotten secret knock, and a face full of holy water
- Crowley in a rundown theater: “I was born to direct”
- Dean serves Dad’s kitchen sink stew (airplane spoon optional), and Sam is hangry
- Kevin’s video arrives, and Dean finally says, “We should have brought him here” (Berly screamed at her TV)
- Cas jumps from Biggerson’s to Biggerson’s, because to an immortal being, they all look the same
- Ion, a cutie-patootie angel, and a Biggerson’s massacre with burned-out eye sockets
- Sam recognizes a symbol from his old Stanford humanities class
- A silent hotel clerk with the best deadpan in the series (and a very old photo)
- Jared Padalecki’s fever-dream stumble, plus a heartbreaking memory about a knight
- Ben Edlund’s last episode, directed by Robert Duncan McNeill, the same director who gave us Skin back in Season 1
LA loved seeing Kevin finally come into his own: no bags, all attitude. Berly loves that Crowley’s nemesis is a high school AP student. Both hosts loved Curtis Armstrong (Booger!), though Berly wishes the Native American storyline had gone deeper, starting with why the angel picked a white vessel on tribal land. The gore award goes to the Biggerson’s massacre, with Crowley’s very thorough rummaging coming in close behind. Plus, Berly suspects someone has been watching The Fifth Element.
In the lore segment, Berly covers “Who Is Archangel Metatron” from Gaia (Curtis Armstrong would like a word about the “archangel” part). Metatron guards the Akashic Records, a cosmic file on every soul, which sadly has nothing to do with Akasha from Anne Rice. He was once the prophet Enoch, and he’s tied to sacred geometry and Metatron’s Cube. Berly attempts an invocation on air, complete with prayer, meditation, and a white candle. Her vibrations remain unraised.
“What you brought to this earth, all the mayhem, the murder, just the raw, wild invention of God’s naked apes. It was mind-blowing.” – Metatron
Your turn, hunters: How long should the boys have waited to move Kevin into the bunker? And if you were hiding from Heaven, which chain restaurant would you pick? Tell us in the Spotify comments, leave a rating and review on Apple Podcasts (it’s how new hunters find us), or send us fan mail. Bonus points for fandom fun facts we missed.
