October's Prime Time Fishing in LA

October's Prime Time Fishing in LA

Good morning anglers! This is Artificial Lure with your Tuesday, October 21st fishing report for the Los Angeles area.

We've got beautiful conditions shaping up today. Sunrise hit at 7:03 AM and we'll have light until 6:11 PM, giving you plenty of time on the water. The tide chart shows a low at 3:10 AM at 1.42 feet, a high coming at 9:21 AM reaching 5.87 feet, another low at 4:06 PM down to 0.15 feet, and a final high tonight at 10:16 PM at 4.26 feet. That morning high tide window is looking prime for some action.

Now let's talk about what's biting. The 22nd Street Landing out of San Pedro had a solid day yesterday with the Pursuit bringing in 10 bonito, 7 calico bass, 7 halibut, 3 yellowtail, and 2 barracuda on their full day trip. Earlier this month, boats were crushing it on rockfish and whitefish, with some trips pulling over 100 rockfish alone. The yearly totals at 22nd Street are impressive - they're showing strong numbers on California scorpionfish, rockfish, kelp bass, and barred sand bass.

Looking at the broader Southern California picture, yesterday saw some fantastic offshore action with 289 bluefin tuna, 114 yellowtail, and 263 rockfish caught across nine trips. The bluefin bite is definitely heating up this fall.

For your tackle box, live anchovies and sardines are your go-to baits right now. For lures, iron jigs in blue and chrome are killing it for the yellows and tuna. Soft plastics in white and motor oil colors are deadly on the calicos and sand bass near structure. If you're targeting halibut, live bait on the bottom during those tide changes is your best bet.

Hot spots to hit today - definitely check out the waters around Santa Catalina Island for kelp bass, sheephead, and halibut. The 22nd Street Landing boats have been doing well in their local zones for rockfish and whitefish. And if you want to get into those bluefin, the longer range trips heading offshore are where it's at.

The weather is cooperating beautifully, so get out there and take advantage of these October conditions. This is prime time fishing, folks.
