Liam Byrne—widely recognized as one of the Kinahan cartel’s top lieutenants and head of its Irish operations—was arrested in June 2023 while dining with family in Majorca, Spain, following a coordinated sting operation led by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) and Spanish police. The arrest was based on a European Arrest Warrant related to a firearms conspiracy, part of a wider crackdown on the Kinahan network’s operations in Britain and Ireland. Byrne had been living under the radar in luxury villas across Spain, maintaining contact with senior cartel figures including Daniel Kinahan, who remains wanted by U.S. authorities. Spanish authorities extradited Byrne to the UK in December 2023, where he was charged with conspiring to acquire and supply illegal weapons alongside his brother-in-law, Thomas “Bomber” Kavanagh, who was already serving a lengthy sentence for organized drug trafficking.
