Goran Gogic, a Montenegrin national and former professional heavyweight boxer, was arrested on October 30, 2022, at Miami International Airport as he attempted to board a flight to Zurich. U.S. federal authorities charged him with coordinating one of the largest maritime drug trafficking operations ever uncovered — the smuggling of more than 20 tons of cocaine, valued at over $1 billion, through international shipping routes. Prosecutors allege that between May 2018 and July 2019, Gogic acted as a logistics mastermind, organizing how multi-ton cocaine shipments were loaded onto commercial container ships from Colombia and rerouted toward U.S. and European ports. The indictment claims he used encrypted communication, corrupt port workers, and coordinated offloading at sea to avoid detection. He was charged in the Eastern District of New York under the Maritime Drug Law Enforcement Act, which gives U.S. courts jurisdiction over narcotics trafficking on the high seas.
