Health Care Fight Risks Sept. 30 Government Shutdown
Description
The United States faces the threat of a government shutdown as Democrats and Republicans clash over health care. Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, demand an extension of Affordable Care Act tax credits to prevent steep premium hikes. Republicans, including Senate Majority Leader John Thune, accuse Democrats of manufacturing a fight with the Trump administration. President Donald Trump dismissed their demands, saying Democrats are “sick” and “at the end of the rope.” With funding set to run out on Sept. 30, a stopgap deal is possible, but both sides are digging in.
