The time is now 7:01 AM in New York, I'm Noa Levi and this is the latest Israel Today: Ongoing War Report.
Good morning. It is 7:00 a.m. in the region, and here is the latest update on the Middle East and related developments affecting international audiences.
In Israel and Gaza, authorities report that seven of the eight hostage bodies Hamas handed over in recent days have been identified at Abu Kabir forensics institute. The names identified so far include Uriel Baruch, Tamir Nimrodi, and Eitan Levy, alongside others such as Yossi Sharabi and Cpt. Daniel Perez. A fourth body transferred last night has been identified as not belonging to a hostage, with officials saying the remains are under review. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office reiterated that Israel will not compromise and will spare no effort until all of the fallen hostages are returned and all remaining bodies are accounted for, consistent with the terms of the ceasefire mediation.
On the living-hostage front, released hostages have been reuniting with their families in scenes described as moving and hopeful for many in Israel and the diaspora. Movements and tributes from performers and public figures have accompanied some reunions, underscoring the emotional toll of the past two years. International and regional mediators have stressed that the ceasefire hinges on the full implementation of the agreement, including the timely return of bodies as well as living captives.
Hamas disclosed that it has returned four more bodies to Israel on Tuesday night, with the overall arrangement under the ceasefire noting the return of 28 deceased captives. Israeli authorities say several of these bodies have now been identified, but concerns remain about delays in the process and adherence to the terms of the agreement. Families of the hostages pressed for full and timely accountability, while officials warned that any deviation could jeopardize the fragile pause in fighting.
Beyond the immediate conflict, a notable corporate profile welcomed back a captive employee. Avinatan Or, a Nvidia electrical engineer kidnapped from the Nova music festival in October 2023, was identified as having been held in Gaza for two years. Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang publicly acknowledged Or’s return and said the company’s broader community has suffered losses during the war.
In domestic security news, a man from the Tel Aviv area was arrested after arriving at gates of a central military base and threatening to kill the prime minister and other public figures. The suspect, a 46-year-old resident of Rishon LeZion, faced an indictment charging threats against three public figures, with authorities seeking to keep him in custody as the case proceeds through the courts.
In other Israeli news, a four-year-old boy was severely injured in Haifa after a fall from a height of about five stories. Paramedics treated the child at the scene and transported him to Rambam Hospital with head and limb injuries.
On the diplomatic and security front, Turkey sent 81 official search-and-rescue personnel and the necessary equipment to Gaza to assist in locating and recovering bodies. Turkish authorities emphasized the humanitarian nature of the mission as part of broader relief efforts.
Meanwhile, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad arrived in Moscow for a working meeting with President Vladimir Putin. The visit is being described as a continuation of high-level discussions that may touch on regional security issues and the political landscape in the Levant.
On the battlefield and security front in Gaza, Palestinian militant groups and Israeli forces remain in a tense standoff along multiple fronts. The timing of ongoing security operation
