Supernatural: Freaks and Geeks (8x18) | Recap & Lore

Season 8 Episode 18 Published 1 year ago
Description

Supernatural Season 8, Episode 18, Freaks and Geeks recap 🚐 Teenage hunters, a mysterious blue van, and one of Supernatural’s most disturbing human monsters on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.

Chrissy Chambers from Adventures in Babysitting is back, and she’s no longer living the normal life her dad promised her. She’s now one-third of a teenage hunting trio, trained by a mentor named Victor who runs a picture-perfect household with homework, curfews, and the occasional decapitation. Sam and Dean aren’t sure what to make of it, but something about this setup feels off.

Episode Highlights:

  • A Lover’s Lane makeout, a hood that flies up, and “Next time, you two are bait”
  • A Kansas sheriff with an inexplicable Louisiana twang (the hosts loved it)
  • A crystal-clear security cam shot of Chrissy, and Dean goes full federal agent
  • Chrissy checks into a motel as a 25-year-old, then as a 40-year-old
  • A vampire runs to a blue van, and LA’s theory is that it’s just a good friend dropping his buddy off for a snack
  • A vampire who keeps crying and saying he’s sorry
  • Victor’s gorgeous house: stained glass, trigonometry tests, and kids who march in single file
  • Sam gets knocked out (again), and the hosts are worried about his brain
  • A dead man’s blood dart to the eye, three empty clicks, and a very dramatic bullet drop
  • Some great visual direction from John F. Showalter, who makes the sets and the action sequences pop

Both hosts loved seeing Chrissy again. She’s a little asshole now, which is honestly accurate for a teen hunter. LA loves it when Dean slips into the dad role with kids like these. Berly loves episodes that remind us humans can be the scariest monsters, and the ending blindsided both of them. The gore is light: a clean, quick decapitation and that dart to the eye. And Kevin is still stuck on Garth’s houseboat.

In the lore segment, Berly revisits the vampire criminals lore from Fresh Blood, via Mental Floss. People have been blaming their crimes on bloodlust for over 400 years. There’s Countess Elizabeth Báthory, who was rumored to bathe in blood and who may have helped inspire Dracula. There’s Fritz Haarmann, the “Vampire of Hanover,” whose head is still kept in a jar at a German medical school. And there’s Rod Ferrell, a teen who led a self-styled vampire clan in the ’90s. Fortunately, all of them were caught.

“If we shut that hellhole once and for all, those three can have a real life.” – Dean

Your turn, hunters: Should Chrissy have gone to her aunt’s? And why does Garth have to check on the kids when Sam and Dean literally live in Kansas?
