Joti Brar: Earlier this week I talked with Garland Nixon about rising discontent in the imperialist heartlands as the economic crisis bites and conditions for workers become ever worse. When inflation is wiping out pay and increasing numbers of people are homeless in the richest countries in the world, is it any wonder that more people are starting to look favourably at the alternative (ie, at socialism)? We talked about the militarisation of the police as governments prepare to suppress rising dissent and unrest. And we talked about the militarisation of the economy as governments prepare to put the whole of society on a war footing. We also looked at the role of the new home secretary Shabana Mahmood, a muslim woman whose job will be to front up the ruling class’s pro-zionist, anti-free-speech and anti-immigrant regimes here in Britain. We discussed the situation where police in Britain continue to carry out mass arrests of peaceful protestors holding cardboard signs in solidarity with proscribed organisation Palestine Action, even as British armed forces continue to participate directly in the genocide in Gaza. With all this evidence, it's time we woke up to the fact that neither the capitalist state machinery nor the bourgeois electoral system can be used to solve the very urgent problems we face. Instead of praying for justice (from a weighted and inherently unjust system) and nicer leaders (to front up a system of ruthless exploitation) we need to organise ourselves to dismantle this machinery of war, repression and exploitation and build a state of a new type – one where the working class wields power and takes decisions in its own interests. ______________________________________________ Subscribe!
