The case has gripped national attention, with the new release sparking even more questions. And across the state, Florida prepares for its 14th execution this year. Samuel Smithers, the so-called “Deacon of Death,” is scheduled to be put to death on October 14th. At 72, his lawyers are fighting to stop the execution, arguing it would be cruel and unusual punishment.
