John the Baptist, the icon of the Aaronic Priesthood, visits Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery and confers upon them the keys of the lower, preparatory priesthood. The priesthood of baptism. Baptism is a representation of the Doctrine of Christ, choosing to enter mortality, take on adversity and the burdens of others, then on to victory through Christ and the resurrection. It is part of the Lower Law that precedes the Higher Law.
