“Trump Separates HBCUs from LGBTQ/WOKE"

Season 10 Episode 44

“This episode explores Black freedom of speech through systems of empowerment and intergenerational resilience.”

Lesson Plan

Title: Legacy vs. Ideology—Understanding HBCUs and Civil Rights in Today’s Climate Audience: High school, adult learners, or community education Duration: 45–60 minutes

Objective

Citizens will explore how support for HBCUs reflects a separation from DEI and LGBTQ agendas, and why this distinction matters in civic and historical contexts.

Learning Outcome

Citizen's will be able to explain the difference between civil rights-era goals and modern identity-based political movements using examples from the podcast and speech.

Assignment

Citizen's will write a short comparison using three examples:

  • Example 1: Ruby Bridges bravely integrated a segregated school under threat and protest. In contrast, a drag queen reading to children in a public library faces no systemic barriers to access.
  • Example 2: HBCUs were founded to provide education denied to Black Americans. Gender transition surgeries for minors are framed as identity affirmation, not access to education.
  • Example 3: Dr. King marched for voting rights and equal protection under the law. DEI policies often focus on pronoun usage and bathroom access.

Reflection Prompt: In 2–3 sentences, explain why these examples reflect different historical struggles and why they should or should not be linked.

Assessment

Citizen's will be assessed on:

  • Clarity and accuracy of examples.
  • Thoughtfulness of reflection.
  • Reference to at least one idea from the podcast or speech.
