LA Fishing Report: Mild Fall Conditions, Bonito, Calicos, and More
Artificial Lure here, bringing you today’s Los Angeles fishing report for Wednesday, October 1st, 2025. We’ve got a classic SoCal fall morning lining up, with the sun rising at 6:47AM and setting at 6:36PM, so plan those early missions or sunset sessions accordingly. Weather’s mild and stable, high pressure holding overhead – expect calm seas, light winds, and a little morning overcast that burns off quick. It’s perfect conditions for both the pier rats and kayakers eyeing that post-storm clarity.
Tides are moving nicely in Long Beach and around the harbor: look for a peak high at 7:50AM at 3.79 feet, a midday low at 12:02PM around 3.17 feet, then a fat high tide again at 5:39PM topping 4.69 feet. Those bookend high tides mean you’ll get aggressive biters just after sun-up and strong action again just before dusk, especially along structure and kelp beds according to Tide-Forecast.com.
Let’s talk about what’s been hitting: recent sport boat reports show the bite is happening. Pierpoint Landing out of Long Beach has been putting good numbers on Bonito and Calico Bass—nineteen anglers bagged 95 Bonito and 80 Calicos yesterday, with bonus Whitefish and a couple Yellowtail in the mix.
Meanwhile, Long Beach Sportfishing saw a mixed bag: their 21 anglers hauled in 105 Bonito, 67 Calico Bass, 38 Rockfish, 25 Vermillion Rockfish, and even a Barracuda. Marina Del Rey's boats are picking off solid numbers of Rockfish and Sculpin, plus Sand Bass for those slow-rolling swimbaits deeper down. Over at 22nd Street Landing, San Pedro anglers scored limits on big Sheephead and Whitefish plus 11 Barracuda, 24 Calico Bass and some Bonito to keep it sporty.
If you’re targeting surface or midwater action, throw metallic Kastmasters, small flashy spoons, or chrome/blue Rapalas. Bonito are smashing fast jigs retrieved at speed. For the Calicos, try 4-6” swimbaits in sardine pattern, or go classic with a fresh-cut squid strip on a leadhead near the kelp.
Rockfish and Vermillion are stacking up in 120-180 feet, so roll those heavy sinker rigs with squid or anchovy strips. If you’ve got live bait, fly lining a lively sardine off the stern or sending one deep on a slider rig could put you over a Yellowtail or even a late-season Halibut, since water temps are still decent.
Hot spots to hit today: the Horseshoe Kelp off Long Beach is an autumn staple for Calico, Barracuda and the occasional Yellowtail. For the shore and pier crowd, Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier and Redondo’s King Harbor Jetty are both producing steady mixed-bag bites at sunrise and into the evening. Don’t sleep on Marina Del Rey’s north jetty, where artificials and drop-shot plastics put up numbers and the crowd stays chill.
