Supernatural Season 8, Episode 15, Man’s Best Friend with Benefits recap 🐕 A witch cop (Christian Campbell) dreams he’s committing gruesome murders, his familiar (Mishael Morgan) goes looking for help, and the title means exactly what you’re afraid it means.

Sam and Dean head to St. Louis, where Detective James Frampton keeps waking up from murder dreams to find bloody shirts in his trash can. His Doberman familiar, Portia, calls in the Winchesters, and the case leads straight into the local witch community. Meanwhile, Dean is still angling to take over the trials. Fair warning: this one is a contender for least favorite episode of the series so far.

• Portia trots into the motel room for belly rubs, and then Dean opens the door to an LBD, heels, and the collar still on
• Familiars 101: half animal, half human, and telepathically linked to their witch in every situation
• Blood splooges #68 and #69 (nice)
• A Three Stooges debate that requires a pause and a Google search (who is Shemp?)
• Monogrammed JMF shirts and a bag of rusty chains for house arrest
• A witch bar with telepathic chess and a very suspicious regular named Philippe La Chat (Sebastian Stewart)
• Invisalign talk and the most awkward bar body slam ever
• Sam vs. the laundry hamper, aka the pratfall of the season
• A witch fight that sends the Winchesters somewhere they never wanted to revisit
• Sam’s “I’m good” and a cough that says otherwise

The lore segment digs into familiars, from the European witch trials, when they were considered demons in animal disguise (and moles were supposedly how witches fed them), to modern paganism, where a familiar might be a cat, a quill-sharing hedgehog, or a spirit guide. Plus the difference between a pet and a familiar, and why someone might buy fox bones online.
