En: Spring had crept up alongside the old farmhouse in the Karoo, like a shy child waiting for its turn.

En: The air was filled with the scent of fresh flowers, but inside the house, the atmosphere hung heavy.

En: The old walls had seen and heard families come and go, opinions clashing and voices eventually quieting.

Af: Hierdie keer was geen uitsondering nie.
En: This time was no exception.

En: He just wanted a quiet place to read his book.

En: Out of the corner of his eye, he saw her attempt to grab his hand.

En: "I want to be alone," he suggested, pulling his book closer to him.

En: But Elna didn't give up easily.

Af: Sy het geglimlag, 'n vriendelike, hoopvolle glimlag.
En: She smiled, a friendly, hopeful smile.

Af: "Seker ons gaan net 'n bietjie stap?
En: "How about we just go for a little walk?"

Af: " het sy gevra.
En: she asked.

Af: "Ek wil iets ontdek.
En: "I want to discover something."

En: Finally, he gave in, and the two children walked outside, exploring the dusty paths of the farmhouse.
