Building a Memory Palace from In the Vineyard of the Text

Step 1: The Major System Code

First, Adah needs to know the basic Major System number-to-consonant code.

  • 1 = T, D, Th
  • 2 = N
  • 3 = M
  • 4 = R
  • 5 = L
  • 6 = J, Sh, Ch, G (soft)
  • 7 = K, C (hard), G (hard)
  • 8 = F, V, Ph
  • 9 = P, B
  • 0 = Z, S, C (soft)

Step 2: Create PAO Images from the Pages

Now, let's use the pages and their corresponding concepts to build the PAO images.

  • Page 8: The number 8 is "F" or "V." The number 0 is "S" or "Z." Combining them, we could get "F-A-S-S," "F-A-Z-Z," or "V-I-S-A." Let's choose Vise as our person/image, as it evokes the "grip" of the intellect.
    • P (Person): Hugh of St. Victor (Illich's central figure).
    • A (Action): Grasping (with a vise, connecting to the number).
    • O (Object): A Sacred Text (representing "Incipit" and the start of a deep intellectual journey).
    • Mini-Palace Locus: The entryway to the room.
    • Mnemonic Story: Adah walks into her dorm room, and there, by the door, she sees Hugh of St. Victor grasping a sacred text with a large, antique vise. This connects Hugh's concept of the "incipit" to the action of the number 80.
  • Page 29: The number 2 is "N." The number 9 is "P" or "B." Together, this gives us "N-P" or "N-B." Let's choose "N-u-B-ia-N" as our image.
    • P (Person): A Nubian Prince.
    • A (Action): Piling (relating to the "little things" in the quote).
    • O (Object): Books (representing "Order" and "History").
    • Mini-Palace Locus: The corner bookshelf in the room.
    • Mnemonic Story: Adah looks to her bookshelf, and she sees a Nubian Prince who is piling up a mountain of books—starting with the "little things" at the bottom to build a great structure of "Order, Memory, and History." Page 49: The number 4 is "R." The number 9 is "P" or "B." Let's use "R-a-B-bi-T" for a clear and memorable image.
    • P (Person): An angry Rabbi.
    • A (Action): Braying (like an ass, from the quote).
    • O (Object): Headphones (representing the "auditory" nature of Illich's critique of modern media).
  • Mini-Palace Locus: The desk chair in the room.
  • Mnemonic Story: Sitting in her desk chair is an angry Rabbit braying furiously into a set of giant headphones. This ties Hugh's angry quote about "ass-like" knowledge directly to the modern intellectual he criticizes.
  • A Tragically Under-Utilised & Misunderstood Memory Technique: The PAO System Explained is a video by Dr. Anthony Metivier that provides a great overview o
