Episode 29
In today's episode we're exploring Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), a treatment originally for decompression sickness that is now showing potential for rewiring depressed brains.
Depression affects one in three people, and traditional antidepressants fail roughly 30% of patients.
We look at how HBOT works by having patients breathe pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber, which causes oxygen to dissolve into blood plasma at much higher concentrations.
This floods key brain areas with oxygen, boosting cellular function and mitigating chronic neuroinflammation, a contributor to persistent low mood.
The evidence is promising but preliminary, particularly for those with treatment-resistant depression or traumatic brain injuries.
However, HBOT courses can cost thousands of dollars, and research suggests it works best when combined with other interventions like psychotherapy or medication.
